Maharashtra Minister Urges Pre-Screening of ‘Chhaava’ Amid Controversy

Maharashtra Minister Demands Expert Screening of ‘Chhaava’ Before Release

The upcoming Bollywood film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, has sparked controversy ahead of its theatrical release. Maharashtra’s Marathi Language Minister, Uday Samant, has urged filmmakers to conduct a pre-release screening for experts and historians to address concerns over alleged objectionable content.

Call for Caution in Historical Representation

In a statement on social media platform X, Samant emphasized the need for accuracy and sensitivity when portraying historical figures, particularly Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, a revered Maratha warrior king. While acknowledging the importance of films in educating audiences about historical events, he stressed that Chhaava should first be reviewed by knowledgeable individuals to prevent any misrepresentation.
“It is a matter of joy that a Hindi film is being made based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the protector of religion and freedom. Such efforts are necessary to make the world understand the history of Chhatrapati. However, many have expressed their opinions that there are some objectionable scenes in this film,” the minister stated.

Objections Over Dance Sequence and Cultural Depictions

The controversy primarily revolves around a specific scene in the movie’s trailer, released earlier this week. A dance sequence featuring lead actors Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai, has drawn criticism from certain sections of society. The scene involves the traditional Marathi instrument lezim, which some believe does not align with the historical context of the warrior king’s life.
Critics argue that such creative liberties could distort historical facts and affect public perception of the Maratha leader. The minister’s demand aligns with growing concerns from historians and cultural organizations that Bollywood often takes artistic liberties when adapting historical narratives.

Minister’s Warning: No Release Without Review

Samant issued a firm warning to the filmmakers, asserting that Chhaava should not be released unless experts have reviewed it. “Our position is that this film should not be released without first showing it to experts and knowledgeable people,” he insisted.
The minister further stressed that any aspect of the film that undermines the dignity of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj would not be tolerated. He called upon the film’s producers and directors to take immediate corrective measures, ensuring that no historical inaccuracies offend the sentiments of the Maratha community.
“Further decisions will be taken after watching the film. Otherwise, it will not be allowed to be released!” Samant warned.

Precedents in Bollywood’s Historical Film Controversies

This is not the first time a historical film has faced scrutiny before release. Bollywood has witnessed multiple controversies surrounding historical and period films, including Padmaavat (2018) and Samrat Prithviraj (2022), where depictions of historical figures led to protests and demands for changes.
Given the sensitivity surrounding Maratha history, the debate over Chhaava raises familiar concerns about artistic expression versus historical responsibility. While filmmakers argue for creative freedom, political and cultural groups often push for greater accuracy in the portrayal of historical events and figures.

Implications for ‘Chhaava’ and Bollywood

With Chhaava set to hit theaters on February 14, it remains to be seen whether the production team will comply with the government’s request for an expert review. If the filmmakers agree, the pre-screening could set a precedent for future historical films, ensuring that they undergo rigorous fact-checking before public release.

Meanwhile, Bollywood continues to navigate the fine line between creative storytelling and historical fidelity. The controversy surrounding Chhaava highlights the ongoing debate on cinematic representation of history and the challenges faced by filmmakers in balancing authenticity with entertainment.

A Call for Responsible Filmmaking

As discussions over Chhaava intensify, stakeholders from both the film industry and cultural communities must find common ground. While cinema plays a crucial role in preserving and popularizing history, it also bears the responsibility of presenting the past with respect and authenticity. The outcome of this dispute could shape the approach of future historical films in India, influencing how filmmakers tackle sensitive cultural narratives.
