Crafted from black stone, the 51-inch tall Ram Lalla Idol portrays the deity as a five-year-old child standing. This choice of material and depiction prompts questions about the significance of the black color and the child form.
The Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya, meticulously carved by the acclaimed sculptor Arun Yogiraj from Karnataka, is composed of black stone sourced from the region. The specific type of black stone, known as “Krishna Shila,” was extracted from Ramada’s land in Gujjegowdanapura, Jayapura hobli, Mysuru district.
The decision to use “Krishna Shila” was influenced by its superior quality and its non-reactive nature to substances like acid. The stone’s unique property ensures that when substances such as milk are poured on the idol, there is no reaction or corrosion over time. According to Ramadas, a portion of the stone was initially hindering agriculture and was later excavated, revealing a massive boulder that was removed using cranes.
Yogiraj’s wife, Vijetha, explained that “Krishna Shila” has a bluish-grey hue, and when coconut and burnt cocoa powder are applied, it transforms into a black shade. Over the years, it hardens and remains impervious to weather conditions, as evidenced by 5,000-year-old temples with idols made from the same stone.
The decision to depict Lord Rama as a child, known as Ram Lalla, at the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is rooted in the city’s significance as the birthplace of Lord Rama, known as Ram Janmabhoomi. The installation places the idol of Lord Ram on the temple ground, while the statues of Lord Ram’s brothers, along with Sita and Hanuman, are slated for placement on the first floor of the grand temple, with an estimated completion time of eight months.
