Why Microsoft Collaborated with Amazon and Google to Address CrowdStrike Outage
On July 18, 2024, a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike caused a global IT outage, affecting approximately 8.5 million Windows devices. Although this incident wasn’t directly linked to Microsoft, it had significant repercussions across the tech ecosystem, prompting Microsoft to take action to support affected customers.
In a blog post, Microsoft detailed the steps it took to assist users worldwide. One of these steps was to collaborate with other cloud providers, including Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Microsoft stated, “We worked with GCP and AWS to share awareness on the state of impact we are each seeing across the industry and to inform ongoing conversations with CrowdStrike and customers.”
Microsoft emphasized the importance of industry-wide collaboration: “As we’ve seen over the last two days, we learn, recover, and move forward most effectively when we collaborate and work together.
The CrowdStrike update, according to Microsoft’s estimates, affected less than one percent of all Windows machines. Despite this, the impact was substantial, disrupting airlines, banks, hospitals, and many other critical services worldwide. Several flights were delayed or canceled as a result. CrowdStrike issued a fix, but only after several hours of significant disruption.
