Russia Launches Largest Tu-160 Bomber Attack on Ukraine in 550 Days
Russia escalated its military campaign in Ukraine with a significant bomber strike on November 17, involving seven Tu-160 bombers and 16 Tu-95MS bombers, launching around 80 missiles. This marked the first use of Tu-160 bombers against Ukraine since May 2023. The Tu-160, known for its speed and heavy payload capacity, is part of a limited fleet, prompting Russia to conserve its missile stockpiles while utilizing the bombers strategically.
Russia Launches First Tu-160 Bomber Strike on Ukraine in Over 550 Days
The conflict in Ukraine has seen a relentless series of missile attacks as Russia seeks to weaken Ukrainian defenses, with strikes becoming increasingly destructive. However, strategic bombers like the Tu-160 have been used sparingly until Sunday, November 17, when Russia launched its largest bomber-based attack on Ukraine in over 18 months.
The assault involved seven Tu-160 bombers and 16 Tu-95MS bombers, which together fired around 80 Kh-555 and Kh-101 missiles. This marked the first use of Tu-160 bombers since May 18, 2023.
Russia’s fleet of Tu-160 bombers is limited, with roughly 15 in service, and not all are fully operational due to ongoing upgrades. As a result, Russia has been cautious in deploying these bombers. The November 17 attack, with its larger number of aircraft and missiles, signals a strategic decision to make use of the bombers’ capabilities while conserving resources.
The Tu-160, referred to as “Blackjack” by NATO, holds the title of the world’s largest and fastest bomber. First introduced in the 1980s, the aircraft can carry up to 31 tons of payload and travel at speeds up to 1,367 mph.
