Putin Faces Nuclear Risk as Ukraine’s Long-Range Missiles Target Russian Infrastructure

Ukraine’s growing missile capabilities, including the new Hrim-2 ballistic missile with a 500 km range, now threaten a significant portion of Russia’s nuclear infrastructure, with 30% of its nuclear warheads within reach. These advancements, which allow Ukraine to target Russian territory without Western approval, increase the risk of nuclear escalation. Ukrainian drones have previously reached Moscow’s outskirts, and while Putin has threatened nuclear retaliation, deploying warheads closer to the Ukrainian border is now risky. Ukraine’s progress, hailed by officials like Yehor Chernev, signals potential strategic shifts in the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine’s evolving military capabilities, including long-range missiles and drones, now pose a significant threat to Russia’s nuclear infrastructure, according to *Foreign Affairs* magazine. The report highlights that 30% of Russia’s 5,580 nuclear warheads are within range of Ukrainian strikes, with additional warheads stationed in Belarus for over a year. Ukrainian drones have previously come close to Moscow, though some were intercepted just outside the capital.

While Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened the use of nuclear weapons, positioning warheads closer to Ukraine’s border is now unlikely, as they would be within Ukrainian strike range. Ukraine’s recent successful test of the Hrim-2 ballistic missile, which has a 500-kilometer range and is noted for its precision, is a game-changer. This new capability allows Ukraine to target Russian soil directly, without needing Western permission. After years of development, the missile is now combat-ready, with Yehor Chernev, head of Ukraine’s NATO delegation, stating that the missile’s impact will soon be evident to both Ukraine and Russia.
