Hollywood’s Rebel Legacy: Chad McQueen Dies at 63, Leaving a Racing and Acting Legacy

Chad McQueen, actor and son of Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, passes away at 63, leaving a legacy in both acting and auto racing. His children continue to honor his passion for racing.

Chad McQueen, son of iconic Hollywood actor Steve McQueen, has passed away at the age of 63. Known for following in his father’s footsteps both in acting and auto racing, McQueen was celebrated for his role as Dutch in the Karate Kid movies. His friend, Arthur Barens, confirmed that McQueen died of organ failure at his ranch in Palm Desert on Wednesday. The actor had struggled with health complications following a severe fall in 2020, from which he never fully recovered.

A Life Dedicated to Family and Racing

McQueen’s children, Chase and Madison, paid tribute to their father in an emotional statement shared on Instagram, highlighting his devotion to family and his enduring passion for racing. “His remarkable journey as a loving father to us, along with his unwavering commitment to our mother, truly exemplified a life filled with love and dedication,” they wrote. They emphasized that his love for racing not only honored his father’s legacy but also passed down invaluable lessons to them.
Chad McQueen’s deep connection to racing began early in life. At just 10 years old, he participated in his first race—a children-only Le Mans event that was part of the production of his father’s famous 1971 film Le Mans. His professional racing career blossomed in the Sports Car Club of America series, a reflection of the values instilled by his father. However, a devastating crash during practice at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2006 brought his racing career to an untimely end.

Acting Career: Dutch from The Karate Kid

Although McQueen’s acting career was brief compared to his father’s, his portrayal of Dutch, a bully in The Karate Kid (1984) and The Karate Kid Part II (1986), remains iconic. His character, a member of the Cobra Kai dojo, added a memorable dynamic to the story, clashing with Ralph Macchio’s character, Daniel LaRusso. While McQueen did not return for The Karate Kid Part III or the modern revival series Cobra Kai, his character Dutch remains a part of the show’s universe, as it was revealed that Dutch was serving time in prison.
Beyond The Karate Kid, McQueen appeared in other films, including Skateboard (1978), Martial Law (1991), New York Cop (1993), and Red Line (1995). His filmography demonstrated a diversity of roles, though his heart ultimately resided in auto racing, which he regarded as his true calling.

A Family of Hollywood and Racing Legends

Born Chadwick Steven McQueen on December 28, 1960, in Los Angeles, McQueen grew up under the spotlight of Hollywood stardom. His mother, Filipino-born actress Neile Adams, and his father, Steve McQueen, were a prominent couple in the entertainment world. The couple’s marriage lasted from 1956 until their divorce in 1972.
Tragically, Steve McQueen passed away in 1980 when Chad was just 19, leaving an immense legacy as a beloved star of films such as The Great Escape (1963), Bullitt (1968), and The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). Chad’s half-sister, Terry, also died young, passing away in 1998 at the age of 38.
Chad McQueen is survived by his mother, Neile Adams, his second wife Jeanie, and his children, including actor Steven McQueen, best known for his roles in The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff, Legacies. McQueen’s family has expressed their desire for privacy during this difficult time but continues to honor his legacy through the family business, McQueen Racing.

Honoring a Passionate Legacy

In 2010, McQueen founded McQueen Racing, a company dedicated to developing high-performance cars and motorcycles. The business is now managed by his children, Chase and Madison, who are determined to carry on their father’s and grandfather’s passion for auto racing.
Chad McQueen’s family has requested that donations be made in his memory to Boys Republic, a charitable organization that supports disadvantaged children, reflecting his desire to give back to those in need.
