Samantha Ruth Prabhu Reflects on Her Grueling but Growth-Filled Journey with Raj and DK
Samantha Ruth Prabhu, celebrated for her powerful roles in Tamil and Telugu cinema, took on a fresh, high-stakes challenge with her digital debut. Starring as Raji, the antagonist in Raj and DK’s The Family Man, she transformed her on-screen persona, winning fans in a new light. Now, back under their direction in Citadel: Honey Bunny, streaming on Prime Video, Samantha shared with The Hollywood Reporter India the intense emotions and steep learning curve she encountered working with the director duo.
Reflecting on her initial experience on The Family Man set, Samantha revealed the emotional toll of her first day. “I cried on the first day,” she admitted, recounting the surprise at the pace and intensity of filming. “Working on my Tamil and Telugu projects felt like a luxury compared to this.” Unlike her typical shoots, where only two to three scenes were filmed in a day, Samantha found herself tackling entire sequences within an hour. Her co-star, Varun Dhawan, called her a “super-duper star” for handling the challenge, but Samantha stressed it wasn’t about being treated like a star. The speed and demands of the set were unlike anything she’d known before.

Unexpected Demands, Emotional Revelations, and the “Raj and DK Way”
Samantha recalled expecting a gradual pace, especially given the physical and emotional demands of her role. Instead, the most challenging scenes, including high-stakes fights and emotional breakdowns, were shot immediately within a few days. “In just 2.5 days, we wrapped up all the intense scenes,” she shared. Struggling to keep pace, Samantha found herself on the phone with her manager, contemplating quitting.
The directors, Raj and DK, were initially unaware of the emotional impact Samantha was experiencing. Raj shared, “After two days, she came up and asked if we were done. When we said yes, she started crying. It was clear then how deeply she’d internalized the character.” The emotional intensity of her scenes, compounded with the tight filming schedule, led to a surprising release of emotions.

Evolving Through the “Raj and DK School of Filmmaking”
Despite the initial hurdles, Samantha now sees the experience as transformative. Describing it as “the Raj and DK way,” she explained that the process taught her resilience and adaptability, shifting her outlook on filming altogether. “Now, I don’t know any other way to shoot. I’ve been trained to keep moving; sitting idle on set feels strange now.”
Citadel: Honey Bunny stands as a prequel to the Russo Brothers’ original Citadel, which premiered in 2023 with Priyanka Chopra in the lead. Samantha’s role in this latest installment not only highlights her dedication to pushing her limits but also underscores her versatility as an actor willing to reinvent herself with each new challenge.
Conclusion: Growth Beyond Boundaries
Samantha’s journey with Raj and DK showcases her growth as an artist and reveals the complexities of stepping out of one’s comfort zone. As she embraces this “new way of working,” audiences can expect her future roles to continue breaking boundaries and redefining expectations.
