Elon Musk Moves SpaceX and X Headquarters to Texas, Citing California Law
Elon Musk announced via his X handle that both SpaceX and the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) will relocate their headquarters to Texas, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. Musk cited frustrations with California’s business environment, particularly pointing to a new state law that prohibits teachers from informing families about student gender identity changes.
In his tweets, Musk expressed that SpaceX will move its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas, where the company’s launch test site is located. This decision marks a significant shift away from Southern California, where SpaceX has played a pivotal role in the region’s burgeoning space industry.
“This is the final straw,” Musk tweeted, referencing the new law and previous legislative actions that he believes adversely affect families and businesses in California.
Following his announcement about SpaceX, Musk also stated that X would relocate from San Francisco to Austin, Texas, citing concerns over safety and navigating through the city.
This move continues Musk’s ongoing dissatisfaction with California, dating back to Tesla’s relocation of its headquarters from Palo Alto to Austin three years ago, driven by housing costs and commuting challenges. Tesla still maintains a manufacturing presence in Fremont, California.
Musk’s decision has sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with Democratic State Senator Scott Wiener questioning the authenticity of the move, given Musk’s history of dramatic announcements. Wiener also pointed out Musk’s previous benefitting from California subsidies.
