Elon Musk’s social platform, X, has unveiled a new feature to address the growing issue of misinformation stemming from parody accounts. The platform will now include distinct labels for accounts and posts identified as parody or satire, helping users differentiate them from legitimate profiles.
In recent months, incidents have arisen where users, including notable news anchors, mistakenly interpreted parody posts as genuine statements. This update aims to curb such misunderstandings. X’s safety team announced the feature via a post, stating, “We’re rolling out profile labels for parody accounts to clearly distinguish these types of accounts and their content on our platform. These labels are designed to enhance transparency and prevent users from mistaking parody accounts for official entities.”
This development follows hints in November from app reverse engineers, who discovered that X was exploring this functionality. The labels are currently optional, and users can enable them by navigating to Settings and Privacy > Your Account > Account Information and selecting the “Parody, Commentary, and Fan Account” option.
