WhatsApp is taking steps to address the common practice among iPhone users of taking screenshots of others’ profile pictures. After introducing the ability to block this action on Android earlier this year, the messaging platform is now extending this feature to iOS users. In essence, WhatsApp users on iOS, particularly those using the beta version, now have the option to prevent others from capturing screenshots of their profile picture, marking a significant advancement in security. Taking a screenshot can be seen as a serious invasion of privacy, and often, individuals are unaware when their picture is being captured.
Despite WhatsApp’s provision for users to set profile pictures, concerns have persisted regarding the lack of privacy if these photos are susceptible to screenshotting, potentially leading to misuse or privacy breaches. The beta version 24.10.10.70 of WhatsApp for iOS has hinted at this new privacy feature, which is expected to be integrated into the public version in the forthcoming months. WhatsApp has already demonstrated the effectiveness of this feature on Android, and now, the same safeguarding measure will be extended to iPhone users attempting to capture profile pictures. Additionally, Facebook offers a Profile Picture Guard tool that prevents others from taking screenshots of the photo.
