The Sparrow Who Borrowed a Rainbow

Pip was the smallest sparrow in the Meadow of Breezes.

He was quick, cheerful, and curious about everything. If a leaf twirled in the wind, Pip wanted to know where it had been. If a cloud drifted across the sky, he wondered where it was going.

One bright morning, something unusual appeared above the meadow.

A rainbow stretched from one hill to another. Its colors glowed so brightly that the flowers seemed to sparkle beneath it.

Pip stopped in mid-flight.

“Oh,” he whispered. “That is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”

All morning he watched the rainbow. The rabbits admired it. The butterflies danced beneath it. Even the sleepy turtles lifted their heads to look.

But as the day went on, Pip noticed something.

The rainbow seemed lonely.

Everyone admired it from far away, but nobody could touch it.

“I wish I could bring some of those colors down to the meadow,” Pip said.

The wind, who often listened to Pip’s thoughts, rustled gently through the grass.

“Perhaps you should ask,” the wind suggested.

“Ask a rainbow?” Pip blinked.

“Why not?”

So Pip flew toward the nearest hill where the rainbow touched the earth.

The closer he flew, the brighter the colors became. Red shimmered like warm berries. Orange glowed like sunset light. Yellow sparkled like golden petals.

When he finally arrived, the rainbow seemed even larger than the sky itself.

“Hello,” Pip called politely.

To his surprise, the rainbow answered.

“Hello, little sparrow.”

Its voice sounded soft and musical.

Pip’s eyes widened.

“I was wondering,” he said, “if I could borrow a little bit of your color.”

The rainbow seemed to smile.

“Why would you like my colors?”

Pip thought for a moment.

“Not for myself,” he said. “I want to share them with everyone in the meadow.”

The rainbow grew brighter.

“That is a lovely reason.”

A tiny ribbon of color floated gently from the rainbow and landed on Pip’s wing.

Suddenly, a patch of brilliant blue shimmered among his feathers.

Pip gasped.

“It’s beautiful!”

“You may borrow one color,” said the rainbow. “But remember, colors are happiest when they are shared.”

“I promise,” Pip said.

He hurried back to the meadow.

As soon as he arrived, everyone noticed.

“Look at Pip’s wing!”

“It shines like the sky!”

“It’s wonderful!”

The animals gathered around him.

Pip felt proud, but he remembered his promise.

Instead of showing off, he visited his friends.

A pale flower received a touch of blue sparkle on one petal.

A gray pebble beside the stream gained a tiny blue streak.

Even a dragonfly carried a glimmer of blue on its tail.

Soon little bits of color appeared throughout the meadow.

Everyone smiled when they discovered them.

The meadow seemed brighter than ever.

The next morning, Pip returned to the rainbow.

“May I borrow another color?” he asked.

The rainbow chuckled softly.

“What happened to the blue?”

“I shared it,” Pip replied.

“Then you may borrow another.”

This time, a ribbon of golden yellow landed on his other wing.

Back he flew.

He shared yellow with daisies, leaves, and smooth stones beside the creek. Tiny golden sparkles appeared everywhere.

Day after day, Pip visited the rainbow.

One day he borrowed green.

Another day he borrowed orange.

Then pink, purple, and silver-tinted light that seemed to dance in the sunshine.

Each time he shared the colors with others.

The meadow slowly became a place filled with gentle surprises.

Children-sized mushrooms wore colorful spots.

Flower petals shimmered at sunrise.

Butterflies carried tiny sparkles that twinkled when they fluttered.

Animals came from distant fields to see the colorful meadow.

“It feels happy here,” they often said.

Pip loved hearing that.

But one morning, when he flew toward the hill, he noticed something strange.

The rainbow looked faint.

Its colors were softer than before.

“Are you all right?” Pip asked.

The rainbow was quiet for a moment.

“I have shared many colors,” it said gently.

Pip’s heart sank.

“Did I borrow too much?”

“No, little sparrow. You always shared them kindly.”

“Then why are you fading?”

The rainbow’s colors shimmered weakly.

“Because colors must travel. They are not meant to stay in one place forever.”

Pip looked back toward the meadow.

For the first time, he noticed how many colors had gathered there.

The flowers, stones, insects, and leaves sparkled everywhere.

Then he understood.

“The colors belong to everyone now.”

The rainbow glowed softly.

“Yes.”

Pip thought carefully.

Then an idea fluttered into his mind.

“I can help.”

He flew back to the meadow.

“Friends!” he called.

The animals gathered around.

Pip explained everything.

Without hesitation, everyone wanted to help.

The butterflies shared their sparkles.

The flowers released tiny colorful glows.

The dragonflies offered shimmering trails of light.

Even the pebbles beside the stream reflected their brightest colors.

Together, the colors rose into the air like thousands of tiny glowing lanterns.

Up they drifted toward the sky.

Higher and higher they floated.

The rainbow welcomed them.

As the colors returned, the rainbow grew brighter.

Red deepened.

Blue sparkled.

Yellow glowed warmly.

Soon the rainbow stretched proudly across the sky once again.

It looked more beautiful than ever.

Pip laughed with delight.

“You shared your colors with us,” he said.

“And you shared them with one another,” replied the rainbow.

That evening, the meadow glowed softly beneath the colorful sky.

Pip sat on a branch and watched his friends playing below.

The colors were no longer borrowed.

They belonged to everyone.

And somehow, that made them even more beautiful.

Above him, the rainbow shone across the horizon.

For a moment, one bright band of blue seemed to wink at him.

Pip smiled.

Then he settled his feathers and listened to the evening breeze carry gentle songs across the meadow.

It had been a wonderful day.

And somewhere beyond the hills, more colorful adventures were waiting.
