Securely Import Excel to Google Sheets: Your Data, Your Way

Unlock secure collaboration! Import and convert sensitive Excel files to Google Sheets with client-side encryption. Enhance privacy and workflow seamlessly. Available now for Google Workspace Enterprise Plus and Education users.
Last year, Google introduced a handy feature allowing users to bring in and transform sensitive Microsoft Excel files into Google Sheets using client-side encryption (CSE). Initially launched as an open beta, this feature is now accessible to all users.
In situations where you’re collaborating with both external and internal partners, working across Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel is common. The recent update not only maintains the privacy advantages of client-side encryption but also enhances workflow by promoting interoperability, as highlighted in Google’s blog post on Monday.
To import Excel files into Google Sheets, simply go to File > Import. It’s important to note that only .xslx Excel files with a maximum size of 10MB can be imported, and other Excel and tabular file types are not supported. When you’re bringing in files, if Google Sheets doesn’t support certain Excel features, it will simply skip them. Plus, keep in mind, you can import up to a maximum of 10 million cells.
Administrators have the option to enable client-side encryption at the domain, organizational unit (OU), and group levels. This can be done by navigating to the Admin console > Security > Access and data control > Client-side encryption.
As of today, the new feature is gradually rolling out to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, with full visibility expected within 15 days. It will be accessible to Google Workspace Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and Education Standard customers.
