Samsung Pioneers 6G Revolution: Leading the Charge in AI-RAN Alliance

Samsung, at the forefront of technological innovation, has taken a significant step by becoming a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance (Artificial Intelligence-Radio Access Network). This alliance, launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024, aims to revolutionize the upcoming 6G era by synergizing AI technology with wireless communication technology.
Arm, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, NVIDIA, SoftBank, and Northeastern University have also joined the alliance as founding members, collectively committed to advancing the development of innovative technologies and their practical application in commercial products.
The primary focus of the AI-RAN Alliance is to combine the strengths of AI and wireless communication technologies, creating an ecosystem that opens doors to new business opportunities. To achieve this, the alliance has established three working groups, each dedicated to specific technical research areas:
AI for RAN: Concentrating on leveraging AI/ML to enhance the spectrum, cost, and energy efficiency of RAN.
AI and RAN: Focusing on the convergence of AI and radio network technology for efficient resource management and optimal infrastructure utilization.
AI on RAN: Exploring new AI applications and services within wireless networks.
These collaborative efforts are anticipated to play a pivotal role in advancing the standardization and commercialization of 6G. This includes the identification of new services, technical requirements, and specifications that will shape the future of wireless communication.
Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President at Samsung Research America, expressed the belief that the AI-RAN Alliance will drive collaboration, spur innovation, and usher in a transformative era around AI and 6G networks. Samsung aims to leverage this alliance to lead technological convergence and service innovation, seamlessly integrating AI with wireless communication technology for the benefit of end-users and operators alike.
