OpenAI Takes on Google with New Search Functionality

On Thursday, OpenAI announced its plan to compete with Google’s dominant search engine by integrating its artificial intelligence into a new search tool. The company behind Chat GPT unveiled a prototype called “Search GPT,” which aims to merge the capabilities of its AI models with real-time web information to provide swift, relevant answers to queries and cite sources.
Currently, Search GPT is being tested by a select group of users and publishers for feedback, with plans to incorporate its features into Chat GPT in the future. This tool will allow users to interact via conversational queries, including follow-up questions, mimicking a human-like dialogue.
Recently, Google introduced AI-generated summary features called “Overviews” at the top of search results, which summarize information before presenting traditional links. This has raised concerns that it could reduce opportunities for displaying ads. OpenAI’s Search GPT appears to offer similar functionality.
Since the launch of Chat GPT in late 2022, the tech industry has been rapidly developing generative AI tools for text, images, and other content creation. Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted ongoing innovations in AI during Alphabet’s recent earnings call.
OpenAI is collaborating with publishers to fine-tune Search GPT, ensuring it complements rather than replaces existing generative AI models. Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic, emphasized the importance of developing AI search technology that supports journalism and publishers, and expressed enthusiasm for partnering with OpenAI.
OpenAI has opened a waitlist for users interested in trying out Search GPT.
