Despite adequate sunlight reaching its solar panels, the spacecraft’s radio remains silent, marking the end of its mission to study lunar dust behavior and conditions in the unexplored lunar south pole region.

The saga of Odysseus began on February 22, when the lander executed a dramatic landing near the moon’s south pole, a momentous achievement following a tense descent marred by a malfunction in its landing guidance system. Despite an unorthodox landing orientation, characterized by a sideways touchdown after one of its legs failed, Odysseus commenced its mission to investigate the behavior of lunar dust during landings and gather crucial data on the conditions prevailing in the scarcely explored lunar south pole region.
Manufactured by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines, Odysseus powered down one week post-landing, entering a dormant phase as lunar night enveloped its surroundings for a duration of 14 days. Hopes were pinned on the spacecraft’s reactivation upon exposure to sunlight, prompting flight controllers to initiate a three-week hiatus for Odie, anticipating a resurgence in its functionality as solar rays illuminated its solar panels once more.
Despite the optimistic outlook, Odysseus failed to transmit any signals following the projected awakening window, signaling a definitive conclusion to its mission. Intuitive Machines relayed the somber news, confirming that the spacecraft’s power system exhibited no signs of reactivation, effectively sealing its fate.

However, Odysseus’s silence since March 20 has dashed any lingering hopes of a revival, marking the permanent cessation of its operations.
