New ISS Images Highlight Auroras, the Moon, and the Space Station

A stunning new set of images from the International Space Station (ISS) captures the moon and vibrant auroras in a breathtaking display. NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, a member of the Expedition 71 crew, took these photos from his vantage point 250 miles (400 kilometers) above Earth.
Dominick shared his excitement on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the auroras have been particularly impressive lately. Cygnus, a cargo spacecraft from Northrop Grumman, docked with the ISS on August 6.
The mesmerizing auroras, which occur when the sun’s charged particles interact with Earth’s atmospheric gases, showcase green and red hues. Dominick captured these lights alongside the moon, with the aurora’s colors reflecting off the lunar glow. “The moon makes its way towards the horizon amidst red and green auroras,” Dominick commented. “Felt so lucky to grab this shot.”
These recent images are part of Dominick’s ongoing work with the SpaceX Crew-8 mission. With auroral activity peaking during his mission, he’s been able to capture these stunning celestial events, sometimes featuring spacecraft like Boeing’s Starliner, SpaceX Crew Dragon, or Russia’s Soyuz.
Dominick has taken approximately 200,000 photos during his ISS mission, balancing his photography with Earth observation and station maintenance tasks.
