Bong Joon-ho’s much-anticipated American sci-fi film, ‘Mickey 17’, has faced a delay, with its release now slated for 2025, as reported by Variety. Warner Bros. made the decision to reschedule the film from its original date of March 29, 2024, to January 31, 2025. This shift was necessary due to various challenges, including strikes and production changes that affected the project last year.
The new release date not only accommodates the film’s debut in IMAX but also strategically coincides with the Lunar New Year, a globally significant movie-going event. January is typically a quieter period for the box office, creating an opportunity for ‘Mickey 17’ to benefit from pent-up demand, much like previous successful releases in this timeframe.
‘Mickey 17’ is positioned between ‘Paddington in Peru’ and Marvel’s ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ in terms of competition, with the former hitting theaters on January 17 and the latter two weeks later on February 14.
Bong Joon-ho, acclaimed for ‘Parasite,’ which made history as the highest-grossing Korean film and the first non-English language movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars, directs ‘Mickey 17.’ The film, adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel, features Robert Pattinson in the lead role as an “expendable” employee on a mission to colonize an ice planet. The star-studded cast also includes Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. ‘Mickey 17’ marks Bong’s first feature since ‘Parasite,’ and it is produced by his company Offscreen, along with Plan B and Kate Street Pictures. Despite keeping many plot details under wraps, the film is described as a high-concept cerebral thriller akin to ‘The Martian’ and ‘Dark Matter.’
