Israel’s Iron Beam Laser Defense System Enhances Air Defense Against Potential Threats
Israel has strengthened its air defense with a $534 million contract for the Iron Beam laser interception system, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems. Capable of intercepting drones, helicopters, and missiles at low cost, Iron Beam provides Israel with an efficient, high-energy laser defense tool. Unlike traditional interceptors, its cost is around two dollars per use, offering a significant advancement in affordable defense technology.
In response to heightened tensions and the possibility of missile or drone retaliation from Iran, Israel has swiftly bolstered its air defense capabilities. The Israeli Ministry of Defense recently signed a $534 million contract with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems to develop the Iron Beam laser interception system. This advanced laser weapon can effectively target drones, helicopters, and short-range ballistic missiles with high precision and minimal cost. Unlike traditional interceptors like the Iron Dome, which cost thousands per use, Iron Beam’s operation costs around two dollars per shot.
Described by Rafael as a “100kW high-energy laser weapon,” Iron Beam has an operational range spanning from several hundred meters to multiple kilometers. Elbit Systems, as a partner in this project, will supply the high-power laser technology essential for the system, further enhancing Israel’s defense infrastructure. President and CEO Bezhalel Machlis emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing this laser technology, underscoring Israel’s innovative approach to cost-effective and sustainable defense.
