Hyundai’s SA-2: Groundbreaking Electric Air Taxi Poised for Urban Sky Revolution by 2028

Futuristic Vertical-Takeoff Air Taxi Set to Revolutionize Urban Travel by 2028 Hyundai’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi, known as the SA-2, is gearing up to enter the market in 2028. Boasting a proof-of-concept for four passengers, this innovative aircraft cruises at 120 mph at an altitude of 1,500 feet, presenting a quieter alternative to helicopters. Developed by Hyundai subsidiary Supernal, the SA-2 utilizes distributed electric propulsion (DEP) with eight tilting rotors for lift-off, offering a glimpse into the future of urban air mobility.
Supernal plans to initiate test flights later this year, with a focus on meeting legal requirements and advancing technology. The SA-2 is designed for a quiet experience, emitting only 65 decibels during takeoff and landing, significantly quieter than traditional helicopters. While Hyundai previously showcased a prototype in 2020, delays ensued, and the new plan involves test flights this year, preliminary FAA applications in 2024, and production launch in 2028.
The success of eVTOLs like the SA-2 hinges on multiple factors, including regulatory frameworks, battery technology, and efficient motor and power electronics. Legislative bodies worldwide are grappling with safety and air traffic concerns, but there are positive signs, such as the European Union’s proposed rules for eVTOL operation and the FAA’s updated regulations and implementation plan targeting 2028 for the commencement of commercial air taxi services in the U.S.”
