Future of AI: Insights from SoftBank CEO and Former OpenAI Chief Scientist

Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI) is being hailed as the next significant advancement in artificial intelligence (AI). Amidst the rush by major tech companies to dominate the generative AI boom, some industry leaders are emphasizing the creation of a safe AI environment. SoftBank’s CEO, Masayoshi Son, and Ilya Sutskever, a founding member of OpenAI, share this vision.
Both Son and Sutskever believe the true potential of AI is yet to be realized, with ASI poised to be far more powerful than current AI. They anticipate that ASI could revolutionize various industries and daily life, though they acknowledge the potential risks for future generations.
At SoftBank’s recent annual meeting in Tokyo, Son predicted that by 2035, AI could be “10,000 times smarter” than any human. He suggested that while general AI might rival a human “genius” and be up to 10 times more capable than an average person, ASI could surpass this by a vast margin.
Sutskever, after leaving OpenAI, announced his new venture, Safe Superintelligence Inc., on social media platform X. He predicted that ASI, which could be superior to humans, might arrive within the next decade. However, he also highlighted concerns about its safety and competitiveness, stressing the importance of addressing these issues as AI continues to evolve.
