Ali Wong Takes the Lead in Netflix’s Upcoming Animated Series ‘Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld’

Ali Wong leads Netflix’s Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld, a thrilling animated series that blends action, humor, and cultural depth. Premiering December 5, 2024.

This December, Netflix is set to dazzle audiences with its highly anticipated animated series, Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld. Starring the versatile Ali Wong, known for her performances in Beef and Always Be My Maybe, the series explores themes of identity, power, and self-discovery through the lens of a Chinese-American teenager battling supernatural forces.

A Peek Into the Storyline

Set to premiere globally on December 5, 2024, Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld follows Jentry Chau, a Texas teen grappling with the realization that a demon king is hunting her for the powers she has tried to suppress her entire life. With the support of her weapon-savvy great-aunt Gugu and a jiangshi—a mythical Chinese hopping vampire—Jentry must navigate an underworld filled with monsters while enduring the daily drama of high school.
Creator Echo Wu, who serves as showrunner, director, and co-writer, has embedded deep layers into the narrative. Wu said with Netflix, “Sometimes finding your self-identity is coming face-to-face with your own demons. Jentry’s journey is about understanding whether her powers define or curse her as she struggles to figure out who she is.”
Wu also delved into the challenges of adolescence, adding, “If a teenager had superpowers, she’d likely hide them. High school is a time when fitting in and being cool feels paramount, making it ‘social suicide’ to stand out. That tension became an interesting dynamic to explore.”

The Talent Behind the Series

The series boasts an impressive creative team, with Gotham Group spearheading production alongside Netflix Animation and Titmouse. Wu’s co-writers include James Hamilton and Ryan Harer, while a powerhouse team of executive producers—Aron Eli Coleite, Antonio Canobbio, Matthew Mahoney, Ben Kalina, Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, and Ali Wong—ensures a polished final product.

Star-Studded Voice Cast

The cast lineup includes:
  • Ali Wong as Jentry Chau: Wong’s impressive resume includes Netflix specials, hit films, and the critically acclaimed Beef.
  • Lori Tan Chinn as Gugu: Known for Orange Is the New Black and Disney’s Turning Red, Chinn brings a wealth of comedic and dramatic experience.
  • Bowen Yang as Ed: Yang, celebrated for his work on The Monkey King and Wicked, takes on the role of Jentry’s sidekick.
  • Additional voices include Lucy Liu, Jimmy O. Yang, Sheng Wang, A.J. Beckles, and Woosung Kim.

Music That Sets the Tone

The series’ soundtrack promises to be as dynamic as its storyline. It features the popular group KATSEYE with their track “Flame.” Other notable artists include Jessi, Yaeji, and Rei Brown. The full tracklist will be available across platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, adding another dimension to this immersive experience.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld intertwines humor, action, and cultural richness, offering audiences an authentic portrayal of a young woman’s struggle to reconcile her identity. With its universal themes and unique narrative, the series is poised to resonate with viewers of all ages.
