Telecom providers, including Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, have blacklisted over 50 companies in the past two weeks, as part of efforts to reduce spam calls and messages, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The regulator also noted that more than 2.75 lakh mobile numbers and telecom resources have been disconnected.
TRAI urges all stakeholders to adhere to the guidelines and help create a cleaner telecom ecosystem,” TRAI stated.
Rising Complaints Against Spam Calls In the first half of 2024, TRAI received over 7.9 lakh complaints regarding spam calls from unregistered telemarketers. To tackle this issue, TRAI issued strict directives to telecom providers on August 13, 2024, to curb promotional calls from unregistered sources using SIP, PRI, or other telecom resources. Violators will face severe consequences, including disconnection and blacklisting of telecom resources for up to two years.
TRAI has also granted a one-month extension to telecom providers to comply with new regulations on whitelisting URLs, APKs, and OTT links, which were initially set to be enforced by September 1
