Microsoft continues to narrow the gap between Windows and Android by enhancing their integration, similar to how Apple’s iPhones and Macs work together. The updated Nearby Share feature is a significant step towards seamless connectivity between Windows PCs and Android smartphones.
Nearby Share Update
Extended Functionality : Previously limited to Windows devices, the Nearby Share feature on Windows 11 now allows file transfers between PCs and Android phones.
New Share Menu : When an Android device is connected to a Windows PC via the Phone Link app, the Nearby Share feature will present a dedicated share menu for direct file sharing between the two devices.
Comparison : Although similar to Google’s Quick Share, Microsoft’s Nearby Share on Windows is not yet integrated with it. However, Google and Samsung have already implemented features to enhance cross-device sharing within the Android ecosystem.
Rollout and Availability
Testing Phase : Microsoft is currently testing the updated Nearby Share in the Preview Channel, with a stable release expected in the coming months. Early Access : To try it out now, users can install the Preview build on their Windows 11 PC and connect their Android phone via Phone Link.
