Italian PM Meloni Uses ‘Namaste’ Greeting at G7 Summit to Symbolize Unity

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni embraced cultural respect and unity at the G7 Summit in Italy by greeting world leaders such as President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with the traditional Indian gesture ‘Namaste’. This symbolic gesture, symbolizing mutual recognition and respect, underscored solidarity among the assembled global leaders.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his first foreign trip following his re-election for a third term. Scheduled to participate in the summit’s outreach session on Friday, he emphasized India’s priorities in artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the strategic partnership with Italy, noting the momentum from Prime Minister Meloni’s visits to India the previous year.
The G7, comprising the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan, is currently chaired by Italy. Held at the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia in the Apulia region from June 13 to 15, the summit aims to foster economic growth, address environmental concerns, and enhance international security amidst global crises like the Ukraine conflict and Gaza situation.
Italy’s presidency stresses defending the rules-based international order, particularly impacted by Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Although Russia was suspended from the group in 2014, Italy, as host, invited leaders from 11 developing nations to engage in discussions alongside the G7 members.
The summit serves as a pivotal platform for global leaders to address pressing global challenges and promote international dialogue.
