In a pioneering move to enhance passenger convenience, Indian Railways has rolled out a groundbreaking trial—India’s first ATM onboard a moving train. The Central Railway has partnered with a private sector bank to install this ATM in the air-conditioned chair car of the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express. If successful, the initiative could redefine banking accessibility during travel, especially on longer intercity routes.

ATM on the Rails: A First for India

The ATM has been discreetly placed in a cubicle at the rear end of the coach, occupying what was once a makeshift pantry area. To ensure safety and functionality while the train is in motion, engineers from the Manmad Railway Workshop undertook significant modifications. A protective shutter door and secure mounting have been added, addressing both passenger access and equipment durability.

This experimental setup will allow passengers to withdraw cash during the 4.5-hour journey between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Manmad Junction in Nashik district—a stretch frequented by daily commuters and tourists alike. The Panchavati Express, known for its punctuality and convenience, was a natural choice for testing the innovative service.

Meeting the Needs of a Mobile Population

India has over 24 million rail passengers daily, and a significant portion relies on cash for onboard purchases, local transit, or destinations with limited card acceptance. By enabling cash withdrawals mid-journey, the ATM on wheels could bridge a critical gap in rural banking and support the broader financial inclusion agenda.

Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer for Central Railway, emphasized the experiment’s intent: “The ATM has been installed on an experimental basis. We’re evaluating its feasibility, functionality, and user response.”

A Step Toward ‘Smart’ Railway Services

This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ larger vision to modernize and digitize the passenger experience. From Wi-Fi-enabled stations to app-based food delivery on trains, the network has increasingly adopted tech-forward solutions to meet evolving passenger expectations. The ATM project adds another layer to that transformation—merging financial access with physical mobility.

If the pilot proves successful, it could lead to wider deployment across other popular routes or long-distance trains, particularly those serving regions where ATM density is low. This could be a game-changer for travelers heading to rural destinations or pilgrims on spiritual routes with limited banking infrastructure.

Global Inspiration, Local Innovation

While onboard ATMs are relatively uncommon globally, some luxury and long-haul trains in Europe and Japan have experimented with similar concepts—albeit on a smaller or more specialized scale. Indian Railways’ attempt marks one of the first efforts to democratize such a service on a mass transit system.

According to a 2023 report by PwC India, over 70% of financial transactions in semi-urban and rural India still depend on cash. Integrating mobile ATM services with the vast railway network could serve as a financial lifeline for underserved populations.

Challenges and Considerations Ahead

Of course, rolling out ATMs on trains isn’t without hurdles. Ensuring uninterrupted power supply, maintaining real-time connectivity for banking transactions, and providing security during halts are just some of the technical challenges. There’s also the question of vandalism, especially in regions with lower surveillance or limited onboard staff.

Moreover, the impact on train operations—such as boarding logistics or the possibility of ATM-related delays—will need to be studied closely. Passenger feedback during this trial will play a critical role in determining future scalability.
