Elon Musk’s Tweet Sparks Global Fame for ‘Thappattam’ Meme from Tamil Film

Elon Musk tweets Thappattam viral meme; director Adham Bava expresses gratitude: ‘Thanks for making it world famous’
Elon Musk recently catapulted the poster of the Tamil film “Thappattam” into the global limelight by sharing its iconic ‘coconut’ meme. Musk used this meme from the 2017 film to critique the iPhone-ChatGPT deal, emphasizing concerns over data privacy issues potentially arising from Apple’s integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its system.
Following Musk’s tweet on June 11 captioned “How intelligence works,” featuring the meme of a man and woman sharing coconut water, Thappattam’s producer Adham Bava expressed his appreciation on X (formerly Twitter). Bava thanked Musk for propelling his movie’s poster to international fame and reshared it, along with the original poster of the film.
Bava’s post quickly gained traction on social media, with many users congratulating him on the unexpected spotlight on Thappattam and its director, S Mujibur Rahman. The film stars Dona Rozario and Durai Sudhakar, and Bava has been actively sharing various versions of the poster on social media.
Musk’s tweet sparked widespread discussions about data security, highlighting potential risks associated with tech partnerships like Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI. The incident underscores the power of social media in amplifying cultural phenomena and initiating global conversations.
