Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Brings Maui to Life in ‘Moana’ Live-Action Film


Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is returning as Maui in Disney’s live-action *Moana*, currently filming in Hawaii. Johnson, known for voicing Maui in the 2016 animated classic, fully embodies the character with his muscular build, signature tattoos, traditional attire, and Maui’s magical fishhook.

The film, directed by Thomas Kail, stars 17-year-old Catherine Laga’aia as Moana and features returning characters like Gramma Tala and Chief Tui, with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Set to release on July 10, 2026, the adaptation honors Johnson’s Samoan heritage, drawing inspiration from his grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, while celebrating Pacific Island culture through storytelling, music, and dance.

This live-action remake follows the animated Moana’s global success, which earned over $687 million, promising a fresh yet culturally authentic experience for fans.

Johnson’s portrayal also included a flowing black wig, a whalebone necklace, and Maui’s magical fishhook, a key prop that highlights the character’s shapeshifting abilities.

Joining him on set was 17-year-old Catherine Laga’aia, who plays the titular heroine, Moana. Directed by Thomas Kail (Hamilton), the film is set to release on July 10, 2026. It will feature familiar characters like Moana, Gramma Tala, and Chief Tui, alongside music composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Johnson has expressed deep pride in the role, highlighting its connection to his Samoan heritage. He credits his late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, as an inspiration for his portrayal of Maui.
