Dhanush has initiated a lawsuit against actress Nayanthara and her husband, director Vignesh Shivan, claiming unauthorized use of visuals from his 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. The documentary, produced by Rowdy Pictures Private Limited, includes footage from the film, which starred Nayanthara and was produced by Dhanush’s company, Wunderbar Films.
Key Allegations
Dhanush, via Wunderbar Films, filed a civil suit in the Madras High Court, accusing the documentary of copyright infringement for using the visuals without obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC). The lawsuit also targets Los Gatos Production Services India LLP, Netflix’s content investment partner.
His legal team earlier sent a notice demanding the removal of the footage within 24 hours, warning of legal action and ₹10 crores in damages. The notice stated:
“Advise your client to remove the content infringing my client’s copyright over the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan… or face legal consequences.”
Court Hearing
During the hearing, senior counsel PS Raman, representing Dhanush, sought court approval to involve Netflix in the case. Although Nayanthara’s and Netflix’s counsels opposed this, the court granted permission for the case to proceed.
Nayanthara’s Reaction
Nayanthara responded through an Instagram post, criticizing Dhanush’s demand for ₹10 crores, calling it an “all-time low.” She highlighted the cooperative approach of producers like Shah Rukh Khan and Chiranjeevi, who had granted NOCs for similar uses without issue, contrasting this with Dhanush’s actions.
This legal dispute between two major figures in Tamil cinema has drawn widespread attention, fueling industry debates on copyright practices.
