Netflix has announced “Terminator Zero,” an upcoming anime series based on James Cameron’s beloved sci-fi film franchise. Scheduled for release on August 29th, the series is set to include eight episodes, coinciding with the premiere of ‘The Rings of Power’ season 2, offering viewers a diverse array of choices.
Mattson Tomlin, known for his work on the series, developed and executive produced “Terminator Zero,” which expands upon the rich universe of Cameron’s franchise by introducing new characters. Production IG Studios and Skydance Animation handle the animation duties, with Tomlin confirming a global release of all eight episodes on the specified date, with hopes for subsequent seasons.
Drawing inspiration from the original Terminator movies and Production IG’s previous projects like ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and ‘Haikyu!’, the first look images offer a glimpse into the series’ visually captivating world.
What to Expect from the Series
Set across two time periods – 1997, during Skynet’s emergence, and 2022, amidst a prolonged conflict between humans and robots – the story follows a soldier’s mission to alter humanity’s fate by traveling back in time. Along the way, she encounters Malcolm Lee, a scientist who has developed a new AI to rival Skynet.
As Malcolm grapples with the ethical implications of his creation, he becomes the target of a relentless assassin from the future, altering the destinies of his three children forever. Directed by Masashi Kudo, renowned for his work on ‘Bleach,’ the series embraces the canon of previous Terminator films while incorporating horror elements reminiscent of Cameron’s original vision.
Tomlin emphasized a departure from the action-centric approach of recent Terminator installments, opting instead for a focus on the suspenseful and chilling atmosphere characteristic of Cameron’s classics.
