A global outage of Microsoft’s online services caused significant disruptions worldwide. Airlines grounded flights, businesses faced technical issues, and users experienced persistent errors. Microsoft and CrowdStrike are investigating and addressing the problems.

Worldwide Impact of the Outage

On Friday, a major outage of Microsoft’s online services sent shockwaves across the globe, disrupting numerous industries and inconveniencing millions of users. The outage led to widespread reports of the notorious ‘Blue Screen of Death’ errors, sparking a flurry of complaints on the social media platform X. Among the affected users were those in India, who experienced significant service interruptions.
Notably, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike also faced a major outage, severely impacting global businesses. The company attributed the disruption to a recent update, which they are currently rolling back to mitigate the issues.
A Microsoft spokesperson commented on the situation, acknowledging the issue and expressing confidence in a forthcoming resolution. The company stated that the problem stemmed from an update from a third-party software platform.

Major Airlines Grounded

The impact of the outage was particularly severe in the United States, where major airlines like Delta, United, and American Airlines were forced to ground all flights. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that these carriers experienced technical difficulties linked to the Microsoft outage. The ripple effects were felt beyond the US, with Berlin Airport suspending all flights and the London Stock Exchange citing technical glitches, according to Bloomberg reports.
In India, major airlines such as SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Akasa experienced disruptions in their online check-in and boarding processes, leading to significant delays. These airlines had to switch to manual processes to continue operations, issuing advisories to passengers to manage the situation.

Business Operations Hampered

The outage extended its reach to the business sector, where numerous companies faced technical difficulties. In Australia, the National Cyber Security Coordinator reported widespread outages affecting various services and companies. Downdetector’s heatmap highlighted significant issues across India, indicating a broad impact on business operations.
Windows users globally reported persistent blue screen errors, with many devices caught in a frustrating restart loop. This not only disrupted individual users but also hampered business productivity, causing delays and financial losses.
In contrast, some major institutions like the State Bank of India (SBI) and stock exchanges NSE and BSE reported that their systems remained unaffected by the outage. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the IT ministry was in touch with Microsoft and assured that the NIC network was not impacted.

Microsoft’s Response and Resolution Efforts

In response to the widespread disruption, Microsoft announced that it is actively investigating the issue. The outage affected critical services such as Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365, which are essential for business and educational activities worldwide. Microsoft’s technical teams are working diligently to resolve the problems and restore normal service.
Similarly, CrowdStrike, which also experienced a significant outage, is rolling back a recent update believed to be the cause of the disruption. The cybersecurity firm is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that businesses can resume normal operations as quickly as possible.
In a post on X, Minister Vaishnaw confirmed that the reason for the outage had been identified and that updates had been released to resolve the issue. The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) also issued a critical advisory regarding the Microsoft outage caused by the CrowdStrike update.
The unexpected outage of Microsoft’s online services has underscored the vulnerability of global digital infrastructure. With major airlines grounded, businesses disrupted, and millions of users affected, the incident has highlighted the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures and reliable digital services. As Microsoft and CrowdStrike work to resolve the issues, the world watches closely, hoping for a swift return to normalcy.
