Indian E-Gaming Sector Poised for 20% Growth, Eyeing Rs 231 Billion by FY25

India’s e-gaming scene is about to go through some major changes, with experts predicting a whopping 20% growth by the fiscal year 2025. This growth spurt is expected to boost the gaming industry’s value to around Rs 231 billion. And it doesn’t stop there. Projections indicate that this upward trend will continue, with the industry expanding at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33%, reaching an impressive Rs 25,300 crore by the fiscal year 2027.
On the global stage, India’s dominance in gaming is crystal clear. In 2023 alone, the country saw a staggering 9.5 billion gaming app downloads, accounting for roughly 20% of the world’s total mobile game downloads. This supremacy is further emphasized by projections showing a significant expansion in India’s online skill gaming market, expected to hit USD 6 billion by 2028.
India has firmly established itself as the world’s largest mobile gaming market, surpassing all others in terms of app downloads and revenue from transaction-based games. Recent data shows a surge in the Indian gaming industry, with revenues from transaction-based games jumping by a substantial 39% in 2022 compared to the previous year.
Moreover, India boasts the largest fantasy sports market globally, with an incredible user base of 180 million. Over the past five years, Indian gaming has attracted hefty investments, totaling USD 2.8 billion from both domestic and global investors.
Interestingly, funding in the sector skyrocketed by 380% since 2019 and saw a 23% increase from 2020. Paavan Nanda, co-founder of WinZO, noted that there’s a significant shift happening globally.
He commented, “We’re witnessing a big change on a global scale. India’s participation in the GDC shows how far our technology and innovation ecosystem has come. Since the Prime Minister urged India to embrace its startup potential in 2015, fast forward to 2024, and India now stands proudly as the third-largest producer of startups worldwide. This global exposure allows us to create world-class products made in India for the world. We’re fortunate to create opportunities for our peers through this initiative.”
India’s gaming scene is further boosted by the presence of three gaming unicorns: Game 24X7, Dream11, and Mobile Premier League, showing the industry’s potential for billion-dollar enterprises. With a current valuation of USD 1.6 billion, the Indian gaming industry is gearing up for tremendous expansion. Projections indicate that by 2025, there will be an estimated 500 million online gamers, with a consistent annual growth rate of 20% between 2022 and 2025.
Recent government efforts underline India’s commitment to fostering the gaming sector’s growth. Initiatives like establishing a National Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comic (AVGC) Centre of Excellence in collaboration with IIT Bombay, along with dedicated AVGC policies in states like Karnataka and Telangana, these efforts reflect the government’s proactive approach to realizing the industry’s full potential.
Additionally, the formation of an AVGC Task Force highlights efforts to unlock the sector’s full economic and creative potential. Despite recent tax policy changes and potential challenges in monetizing the user base, investors remain bullish about the future of the Indian gaming industry.
The gaming industry’s solid growth foundations, along with inventive ways to generate revenue through platforms like the United Payment Interface (UPI), position India as a leading force in the global gaming arena, poised to make substantial impacts on interactive entertainment. As India transitions from being a net importer of gaming titles to an exporter of its culture, heritage, content, and intellectual property, the future of the gaming industry looks bright.
With a diverse talent pool, forward-thinking leadership, and an unparalleled growth trajectory, India is ready to reshape the global gaming scene, creating high-quality jobs and driving economic growth in the years ahead.
