Global philanthropist Mr. Bill Gates, known as the co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, received the KISS Humanitarian Award 2023 in recognition of his significant philanthropic efforts. The award ceremony, held on February 28, 2024, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, celebrated Gates for his outstanding contributions to improving global health, education, and addressing climate change. He was acknowledged for employing innovative technology solutions to reduce inequality.
The event, which had virtual participation from KIIT and KISS staff, students, and alumni, featured a notable moment where Gates engaged in a meaningful conversation about gender equality prompted by a question from a KISS alumna.
Prof. Achyuta Samanta, the founder of KIIT, KISS & KIMS, expressed that awarding Bill Gates with the KISS Humanitarian Award not only recognizes his exceptional contributions but also enhances the prestige of the award. Gates’ acceptance sets a new benchmark for global humanitarian work, and it is a profound honor for the organization to have him join the esteemed roster of awardees. In his acceptance speech, Gates expressed deep gratitude and reflected on the transformative work of Dr. Samanta and KISS, praising their vision and dedication to providing quality education to indigenous communities. He emphasized the importance of civic engagement and a community-first approach to education.
Started in 2008 by Prof. Achyuta Samanta, the KISS Humanitarian Award stands as the most esteemed recognition from KIIT and KISS. The award comes with a citation scroll and a special gold-plated trophy that carries a meaningful social message. Lord Justice Nicholas Addison Phillips, serving as the President of the Supreme Court of the UK; Lyonchhen Jigmiy Thinley, the Prime Minister of Bhutan; Madam Albina Du Boisrouvray, the Founder of FXB International; His Holiness the Dalai Lama; Prof Muhammad Yunus, the Founder of Grameen Bank; Mr. Dansa Kourouma, the President of the National Transition Council of Guinea; and Mama Rachel Ruto, holding the esteemed position of the first lady of the Republic of Kenya.
