Varun Dhawan's Baby John faces a steep decline at the box office, earning just Rs. 1 crore on Day 9.

Baby John Struggles at the Box Office: Saturday Surge Offers Glimmer of Hope

Varun Dhawan’s Baby John faces tough competition, earning ₹4.25 crore on Day 4. Explore its struggles, critical reviews, and comparisons to Pushpa 2.

Varun Dhawan’s latest release, Baby John, has faced an uphill battle at the box office since its debut, but Saturday brought a faint ray of hope. After consistent declines, the film saw a slight recovery, earning ₹4.25 crore. This brings its total domestic earnings to ₹23.90 crore, as reported by Sacnilk. Despite the uptick, the film is grappling with canceled shows and stiff competition from blockbusters like Pushpa 2.

A Rocky Start and Steady Decline

Baby John opened on Wednesday with a lackluster ₹11.25 crore, despite releasing during a holiday. Thursday saw a sharp decline of 57.78%, with collections dropping to ₹4.75 crore. The downward spiral continued on Friday, with a further 23% dip as the film managed only ₹3.65 crore. However, Saturday’s marginal jump in earnings offered a much-needed respite, signaling a potential shift in audience interest.

Competition from Pushpa 2

While Baby John struggles to find its footing, Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 continues its domination. Now in its fourth week, the film amassed ₹12.5 crore on the same day, dwarfing Baby John’s numbers and highlighting the stark contrast in audience reception.

Comparisons to Varun Dhawan’s Previous Releases

When stacked against Varun Dhawan’s 2022 hit Bhediya, the numbers are even more telling. Bhediya earned ₹32.4 crore in its first four days, comfortably surpassing Baby John’s ₹23.90 crore.
Directed by Kalees, Baby John is the Hindi remake of Atlee’s 2016 Tamil blockbuster Theri. Featuring a star-studded cast, including Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, Zara Zyanna, and Jackie Shroff, the film aimed to replicate the original’s success but has fallen short of expectations.

Critical Reception

The film’s struggles are not limited to the box office. Critics have been unkind, with many calling it a missed opportunity. Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express minced no words, awarding the film one star and describing it as “a bloated, cacophonous, derivative, incoherent mess.” Gupta also criticized Dhawan’s performance, stating his “delivery is fit only for low-fi comedies,” making him ill-suited for a project of this nature.

The Road Ahead

Despite its struggles, Baby John could still gain some traction, especially if word-of-mouth promotion picks up or new strategies are employed to engage audiences. However, the uphill battle remains steep, with strong competition and an underwhelming critical response standing as significant obstacles.
