Apple Halts Vision Pro 2 for Affordable Alternative

Apple Inc., renowned for its cutting-edge technology and innovative products, is shifting its focus from high-end luxury to affordability. The Information recently reported that Apple has suspended its work on the next generation of its premium Vision Pro headset. Instead, the tech giant is dedicating its efforts to developing a more affordable version of the headset, slated for release by the end of 2025.

Vision Pro Sales Slump Spurs Strategic Shift

The decision comes on the heels of disappointing sales figures for the current $3,500 Apple Vision Pro, which hit the market earlier this year. Initially, Apple had ambitious plans to roll out two configurations of its Vision headset, mirroring its strategy with the iPhone’s standard and Pro models. However, over the past year, the company has redirected its focus from the high-end Vision Pro successor to reducing the material costs of the first-generation accessory.

What to Expect from Apple’s Affordable Mixed-Reality Headset

The forthcoming affordable headset, internally known as N109, is expected to retain some of the high-resolution features of the Vision Pro while simplifying other aspects. According to sources, the cheaper model will feature the same high-resolution screens but with a less complex head strap, fewer cameras, and smaller speakers. One of Apple’s goals is to make the device at least one-third lighter than the Vision Pro, a move that critics believe will significantly enhance its design and user comfort.
Despite these adjustments, Apple faces significant challenges in maintaining quality while cutting costs. The company has been sourcing less expensive displays from its Chinese partner, Seeya Technology. However, meeting Apple’s stringent quality standards has proven difficult. This balancing act between cost reduction and quality maintenance will be crucial as Apple moves forward with its new headset model.

Commitment to the Vision Product Line and Future Technologies

Apple’s pivot doesn’t signal a retreat from the Vision product line or augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) technologies. Recently, Apple expanded the availability of the Vision Pro to eight additional countries, including China and Japan, underscoring its commitment to these emerging technologies. At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple also provided a sneak peek into VisionOS 2, hinting at the future capabilities and enhancements for its AR/VR ecosystem.

Upcoming iOS 18 Beta 2 and Beyond

In addition to its AR/VR advancements, Apple continues to innovate across its product lines. The company recently announced that new features in iOS 18 Beta 2 will be available to users starting Monday, June 24th. These updates reflect Apple’s broader strategy of continual improvement and user-focused innovation.
