Akira Toriyama, the visionary mind behind the iconic Dragon Ball series and a towering figure in the manga world, has passed away at the age of 68. On March 1st, Toriyama succumbed to an acute subdural hematoma, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly shaped the manga and anime industries. Bird Studio, which Toriyama established in 1983, shared the news of his departure, highlighting the profound loss felt across the creative community and beyond.
Toriyama’s journey in the world of manga began in Nagoya, Japan, in 1955. From a young age, he was drawn to drawing, a passion that would eventually see him sidestep a formal education in favor of a direct leap into the creative fray. After high school, he cut his teeth in an advertising agency, designing posters before venturing into the competitive manga industry at 23. His initial attempt to break into the scene through a weekly manga magazine contest didn’t pan out. However, persistence led him to Weekly Shōnen Jump, where his first work, Wonder Island, was published in 1978. Despite a lukewarm reception to his early works, Toriyama’s relentless dedication to his craft soon paid dividends.
The launch of Dr. Slump in 1980 marked Toriyama’s breakthrough, endearing him to a wide audience with its humorous take on the adventures of a robot girl. This success not only earned Toriyama a prestigious Shogakukan manga award but also set the stage for the creation of Bird Studio. By 1984, Toriyama introduced the world to Dragon Ball, a series that would become synonymous with his name, elevating him to the status of one of Japan’s most celebrated manga authors.

In lieu of flowers, the studio conveyed Toriyama’s preference for privacy and mentioned that plans for a commemorative gathering would be shared once decided.
