Rajkummar Rao on Being Replaced by a Star Kid Overnight: ‘It’s Not Fair’

Rajkummar Rao is gearing up for the release of his upcoming rom-com “Mr and Mrs Mahi,” which also stars Janhvi Kapoor. Directed by Sharan Sharma and produced by Zee Studios and Dharma Productions, the film is set to release on May 31. As part of his promotional activities, Rao recently shared an anecdote with Karan Johar about being unfairly replaced by a star kid in a film overnight.
During their conversation, Karan Johar touched on the insider-outsider debate in the film industry, mentioning how some people claim to have lost roles to star kids or missed opportunities due to not attending parties. Johar expressed skepticism about such claims, noting that he hadn’t witnessed such transactions at parties himself.
Responding to this, Rajkummar Rao recounted his own experience. He recalled being replaced by a star kid in a film early in his career, describing it as unfair. “When I came to Mumbai, I was told to attend parties to make contacts. While networking isn’t an issue, going to a party just to make connections felt odd. I was supposed to do a film, but overnight I was replaced by someone who happened to be a star kid. It felt unfair that just because you know people and can make calls, you can control things. Ironically, that film was never made. The person who replaced me was an insider, but it could just as easily have been a successful outsider doing the same to someone else,” Rao shared.
### What’s Keeping Rajkummar Rao Busy?
Besides “Mr and Mrs Mahi,” Rajkummar Rao has several projects lined up. He will next be seen in “Stree 2,” directed by Amar Kaushik, alongside Shraddha Kapoor, Aparshakti Khurana, and Pankaj Tripathi.
