Intel has introduced its latest AI processors for laptops, the Core Ultra 200V series, just ahead of IFA 2024. Codenamed Lunar Lake, these processors are touted as the most efficient x86 chips ever created, marking a significant advancement in AI PC technology.
Key Innovations
The Core Ultra 200V processors feature a new architecture and design, incorporating a memory-on-chip layout similar to Apple’s M-series chips. This design enhances performance and efficiency across CPU, GPU, and NPU components.
Performance Enhancements
CPU: The flagship Intel Core Ultra 9 288V model boasts an octa-core CPU with four high-performance Lion Cove P-cores. It offers a 15% increase in performance per watt, a 10% improvement in performance per mm² die area, and a 14% increase in instructions per cycle (IPC), reaching clock speeds up to 5.1 GHz. The additional four Skymont E-cores feature a 68% IPC increase and 2x AI throughput.
Power Efficiency: Lunar Lake chips deliver 50% lower package power compared to previous generations, enabling up to 20 hours of battery life for productivity tasks. The Core Ultra 9 288V also outperforms the Apple M3 in multi-threaded performance.
GPU Advancements
The new Xe2 graphics integrated into the Core Ultra 200V feature eight cores and offer up to 30% better performance. The Xe2 140V graphics are 15% faster than the Radeon 800M in popular games and provide a 68% performance boost over Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite in compatible titles. The Xe2 graphics deliver 1080p gaming at higher frame rates while consuming 30% less power than AMD’s HX 370 and 50% less than Snapdragon X Elite.
NPU Capabilities
The Lunar Lake processors include a neural processing unit (NPU) that delivers up to 48 TOPs, enhancing AI performance. Combined with the CPU and GPU, the total AI performance reaches up to 120 TOPs. The new NPU is 20% more powerful than the Hexagon NPU on Snapdragon X Elite chips and supports Copilot+ PC features in November via a Windows 11 update.
Additional Features
The Core Ultra 200V series also includes an integrated modem supporting Wi-Fi 7. Over 80 laptops from 20 brands featuring these processors will be available starting September 24, with pre-orders opening today and an announcement in India on September 12.
Intel emphasizes the Core Ultra 200V’s superior performance and broad software compatibility, contrasting it with ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite/Plus devices.
