At its 10th annual “Google for India” event, Google announced several updates, with a strong emphasis on AI enhancements. Key highlights included the introduction of Hindi support for Gemini Live, gold loans on Google Pay, and a new video recognition feature for Google Lens. Among the updates, Google Maps is set to receive new features to improve user experience.
In India, Google Maps will now provide real-time weather updates, allowing users to report and receive alerts about fog and flooding on roads. This feature is especially useful for those traveling during the rainy season, as it will help them avoid waterlogged roads and potholes. The data will be crowdsourced from user feedback within the app.
Additionally, Google Maps will introduce AI-summarized reviews, giving users quick overviews of restaurants, hotels, and other places, saving time in decision-making. According to Snigdha Bhardwaj, Director of Search and Generative AI Trust Strategy at Google, the company has used AI to prevent scams, helping safeguard Indian users by stopping over ₹13,000 crore in fraud and removing 170 million policy-violating reviews.
Other recent updates to Google Maps include AI-powered routing to help four-wheeler drivers avoid narrow roads, and a feature highlighting flyovers along routes in 40 Indian cities for smoother navigation. Electric vehicle (EV) users can now find nearby charging stations, and metro ticket booking has been integrated directly into the app for a more streamlined public transport experience. Moreover, users can explore curated recommendations from local experts for dining and entertainment.
Lastly, the “Lists to Explore” feature helps users discover new places, from weekend getaways to hidden gems in their own city.
