SOLAR MINI Language Model

Upstage, a Korean AI Pioneer, Unveils Revolutionary SOLAR MINI Language Model on AWS

Upstage, a South Korean AI startup, has just rolled out its cutting-edge SOLAR MINI Small Language Model (SLM) on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This model, available in both Korean and English on Amazon JumpStart and AWS Marketplace, will soon include Thai and Japanese options as well.
What’s remarkable about this compact yet powerful model is its versatility. It can be easily adjusted and fine-tuned to handle various language tasks like comprehension, summarization, translation, and content prediction. With this innovation, Upstage offers its customers a convenient way to dive into generative AI without the hassle of training models from scratch. This opens up doors for applications across different sectors such as entertainment, healthcare, research, ecommerce, and education.
According to Jeongwon Yoon, the country director of worldwide public sector at AWS Korea, Upstage’s SOLAR MINI on AWS is a game-changer for businesses of all sizes, enabling them to seamlessly integrate generative AI locally. By leveraging AWS’s secure and scalable infrastructure, Upstage is leading the charge in AI innovation, providing organizations with the necessary tools to incorporate generative AI into their applications effortlessly.
Compared to large language models (LLMs) with hundreds of billions of parameters, SLMs are lightweight, utilizing fewer than 20 billion parameters. This means that SOLAR MINI, with its smaller training dataset of 10.7 billion parameters, can execute inference tasks at a lower cost.
This announcement coincides with AWS’s substantial commitment to invest KRW 7.85 trillion ($5.88 billion) in cloud infrastructure in South Korea by 2027. This investment is expected to significantly enhance the country’s cloud services capabilities, contributing an estimated KRW 15.06 trillion ($11.28 billion) to South Korea’s GDP and supporting around 12,325 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs annually across various South Korean businesses.
