Song Joong Ki Takes on the North Korean Dialect Challenge in ‘My Name is Loh Kiwan’

Song Joong Ki, known for his roles in popular series like Vincenzo and Descendants of the Sun, recently took part in a press conference in Seoul for Netflix’s new film, “My Name is Loh Kiwan.” The event, held on the morning of the 27th, featured lead actors Song Joong Ki, Choi Sung Eun, and director Kim Hee Jin.
The movie revolves around the poignant narrative of Kiwan, a defector clinging to the last shreds of hope upon arriving in Belgium, and Marie, a woman who has lost her purpose in life. Song Joong Ki, portraying a character struggling for refugee status in the unfamiliar European landscapes, delivers a performance that is both emotionally raw and captivating. Transitioning from his previous role as a gangster in Helpless, Song takes a bold step into the life of a defector, showcasing his versatility and commitment to challenging roles.
Reflecting on his connection to the project, Song Joong Ki shared, “Every film is a journey, but ‘My Name is Loh Kiwan’ was an especially long one. Because of its emotional depth, I’m more nervous than ever. This movie beautifully captures Kiwan’s journey in life, holding onto the delicate hope of a fresh start in Belgium and facing an unwavering battle for survival. Marie’s character becomes a source of healing for him, turning the film into a touching story of hope and resilience.
Song recalled his initial reaction to the script with profound emotion and intrigue. “I first read it about one or two years ago,” he revealed. The script’s freshness and compelling storyline resonated with me right away. Surprisingly, I didn’t know Kim Hee Jin was the writer initially, but the script alone convinced me of its great potential.
When asked about tackling a role that required a specific dialect for the first time in his career, Song shared, “This was a first for me. As an actor, I’ve always been excited to take on challenges and explore different aspects of my craft. Diving into the North Korean dialect wasn’t just a new experience; it’s something that has brought me immense satisfaction.
“My Name is Loh Kiwan” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on March 1st, reaching audiences in over 190 countries.
