OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently stirred the tech world with a bold claim: OpenAI believes it knows how to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) and is now setting its sights on an even more ambitious goal — superintelligence. In a post on his blog, Altman expressed excitement about the potential of superintelligent tools to revolutionize scientific discovery and innovation, ushering in a future of abundance and prosperity.
“We love our current products, but we are here for the glorious future,” Altman wrote, emphasizing the transformative potential of AI to surpass human limitations and materially enhance economic output.
AGI vs. Superintelligence: Definitions and Timelines
Altman’s vision of AGI aligns with OpenAI’s definition: highly autonomous systems that outperform humans in most economically valuable tasks. For Microsoft, OpenAI’s key partner and investor, AGI also represents AI capable of generating $100 billion in profits, a milestone that, when achieved, will terminate Microsoft’s access to OpenAI’s technology under their agreement.
Altman has hinted at an aggressive timeline, suggesting superintelligence could arrive within “a few thousand days.” However, he acknowledges the inherent unpredictability of AI development, cautioning that current technologies face significant limitations, such as hallucinations, costly operations, and error-prone outputs.

Asked about these criticisms, Altman defended OpenAI’s commitment to safety, pointing to the organization’s track record. However, with ongoing corporate restructuring aimed at attracting investors, skeptics question whether financial motives may overshadow ethical considerations.

Altman’s optimism is tempered by a clear acknowledgment of the challenges ahead. “We’re pretty confident that in the next few years, everyone will see what we see,” he wrote, stressing the importance of acting with care to maximize benefits while ensuring empowerment.
