India Set to Boost Computing Power with Acquisition of 10,000 Graphics Processing Units by 2025
India gears up to revolutionize computing with the acquisition of 10,000 GPUs by 2025, aiming to bolster its digital capabilities. Explore how this move aligns with India’s rising role in global data and AI development.
India, a powerhouse of digital data, is gearing up to supercharge its computing capabilities by acquiring 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) over the next year and a half. This update was shared by Amitabh Kant, India’s representative at the G20 summit, in a recent announcement.
Highlighting India’s significant role in the digital landscape, Kant noted that the country, boasting the world’s largest population, contributes a whopping 20 percent to the global data pool. Additionally, India ranks second globally in terms of GitHub AI projects, accounting for 19 percent of such projects worldwide. Kant emphasized India’s active involvement in international AI development, recognizing it as a pivotal opportunity for the nation to revolutionize education, healthcare, and overall human development.
A recent report by CBRE South Asia Pvt. Ltd revealed India’s dominance in the Asia Pacific region, with the country leading in data center capacity at 950 MW, excluding China. This surpasses other major players like Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Singapore, and Korea. Forecasts indicate that India is poised to further expand its capacity, with an anticipated addition of 850 MW between 2024 and 2026, outpacing its regional counterparts.
The burgeoning data center industry in India is entering a growth phase, expected to double its capacity in the next three years from 0.9 GW in 2023 to 2 GW in 2026, according to a report by CareEdge Ratings. This surge presents substantial investment opportunities, with an estimated capital expenditure of Rs 50,000 crore over the next three years. Despite being a major contributor to global data, India currently holds a mere 3 percent share of the global data center capacity.
With skyrocketing mobile data usage, India leads globally in exabytes consumed per month. CareEdge Ratings predicts that the push for data localization will drive compulsory investments in data centers, while state-led cost-saving incentives will attract further investments.
Maulesh Desai, Director at CareEdge Ratings, remarked on India’s transition from a developing to a developed economy, attributing it to the digital revolution fueled by e-commerce, online payments, streaming services, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies like 5G, IoT, and AI. Additionally, he highlighted the increasing importance of Edge data centers in catering to the rising demand from tier II and tier III cities, ensuring minimal latency for users.
