As marketers increasingly utilize tools like ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, Microsoft’s Bing Chat, Meta AI, or their own large language models (LLM), a critical concern emerges—dealing with “hallucinations” and finding ways to prevent them.
To break down the concept, IBM defines AI hallucination as when a large language model, such as a generative AI chatbot or computer vision tool, perceives patterns or objects that don’t exist or are imperceptible to humans. This leads to nonsensical or inaccurate outputs.
Suresh Venkatasubramanian, a professor at Brown University, highlights that LLMs are trained to produce answers that sound plausible rather than being based on truth. He likens the output to how a young child might endlessly create stories when prompted.
If hallucinations were rare occurrences, marketers might not worry much. However, studies indicate that chatbots fabricate details in at least 3% of interactions, potentially reaching up to 27%, even with preventive measures.
To navigate these challenges, marketers are advised to:
  1. Use generative AI as a starting point: Treat it as a tool, not a substitute, and align the content with your brand voice.
  2. Cross-check content: Implement peer reviews and collaborative efforts.
  3. Verify sources: Despite LLMs handling vast information, credibility varies among sources.
  4. Use LLMs strategically: Incorporate generative AI into your process for identifying missing information but validate suggestions.
  5. Stay informed: Keep abreast of AI developments to enhance output quality and be aware of potential issues like hallucinations.
Despite the risks, hallucinations can have value. Tim Hwang from FiscalNote suggests that LLMs excel in areas where traditional computers struggle, such as storytelling and creativity. Brand identity, being shaped by public perception, might even benefit from controlled hallucinations, where marketers prompt LLMs to imagine scenarios that traditional methods might find challenging or expensive to measure.
One example is assigning scores to objects based on brand alignment and then asking the AI to identify potential lifelong consumers. Hwang emphasizes that rather than fearing hallucinations, manipulating them can yield significant benefits in advertising and marketing.
A recent application of hallucinations is showcased in the “Insights Machine,” a platform allowing brands to create AI personas based on detailed demographics. While these AI personas may sometimes provide unexpected responses, they primarily serve as creative catalysts for marketers, emphasizing the interpretive role of humans in utilizing these transformative technologies.
