As AI transforms technology and industry, engineers must adapt to thrive in this new landscape. During a recent webinar, industry leaders highlighted several crucial skills for engineers to succeed in an AI-driven world.
Aditya Kulkarni, VP of engineering at Dun & Bradstreet, noted that AI’s predictive and generative capabilities are reshaping various engineering disciplines, presenting both opportunities and challenges. He emphasized the importance of continuous learning, curiosity, and subject matter expertise. Aditya recommended a multi-faceted approach to skill development, including formal education, online resources, mentorship, and hands-on experience.
Masa Karahashi, SVP of engineering at Avalara, stressed the benefits of practical engagement with AI tools. He encouraged engineers to experiment with tools like ChatGPT to understand AI’s capabilities and limitations. However, Masa and Aditya agreed that the ability to critically evaluate AI outputs is crucial. Masa stated, “Use the tool for what it is, but it’s going to give you a certain output, and you’ve got to look at the output, use your subject matter expertise, and say, ‘What is this telling me? What can I do with this data?’”
This focus on critical thinking is vital due to the phenomenon of AI hallucinations, where AI generates false or misleading information. Masa warned about the ease of using AI and its potential to create problems if users do not understand its shortcomings. Aditya added that ethical considerations and compliance are key skills. Engineers must understand laws and regulations around AI and ensure responsible use, addressing biases and ethical concerns.
Aditya also highlighted the importance of integration skills. Engineers need to understand AI systems’ limitations and strategically integrate AI solutions, considering factors like cost-effectiveness, legal hurdles, and project-specific needs. Masa cautioned against relying solely on AI outputs, urging engineers to customize and refine them to maintain credibility with their audience.
