Google Intensifies AI Development with Strategic Team Reshuffle
In a bid to accelerate its artificial intelligence (AI) advancements, Google has restructured its AI development teams, uniting critical functions under Google DeepMind. This move marks a significant step in streamlining efforts to deliver cutting-edge AI platforms, tools, and services.
Logan Kilpatrick, head of product for Google’s AI Studio developer platform, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the AI Studio team and the API development team for the Gemini model series are transitioning to Google DeepMind. Formed in 2023 through the merger of Google DeepMind and the Google Brain team, DeepMind has spearheaded several AI innovations, including the Gemini series.
“This move will allow us to double down on our already deep collaboration and accelerate the research-to-developer pipeline,” Kilpatrick stated, emphasizing that the teams’ core mission remains unchanged.
A Vision for Greater Accessibility and Impact
Jaana Dogan, an engineer from one of the transitioning teams, highlighted the potential for broader public access to DeepMind’s work. “Better APIs, more open source, more tools—you name it. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s coming next,” she shared on X.
Google’s recent consolidation reflects a broader strategy aimed at enhancing AI accessibility and usability. By aligning its resources under DeepMind, the tech giant is laying the groundwork for more impactful innovations and tools, opening new opportunities for developers and researchers alike.
Building Momentum with Gemini
This restructuring follows Google’s earlier decision to move the team behind its Gemini-powered chatbot to DeepMind. At the time, CEO Sundar Pichai expressed a commitment to “increasing the pace of progress” in AI. Internal audio from a December 2024 Google meeting, obtained by CNBC, revealed Pichai’s enthusiasm for Gemini’s “strong momentum” and his acknowledgment of the challenges ahead.
“Scaling Gemini on the consumer side will be our biggest focus in 2025,” Pichai reportedly said. “It’s critical we internalize the urgency of this moment and move faster as a company. The stakes are high.”

Over recent months, Google has also integrated its models, research, and responsible AI teams into DeepMind. This strategic alignment underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining its leadership in the competitive AI landscape.
