Russell, who ventured into Indian cinema with the 2019 film *Junglee* starring Vidyut Jammwal and Akshay Oberoi, revealed his admiration for Indian talent during a recent interview at Film Bazaar 2024, held alongside the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji.
“I’ve wanted to work with Aamir Khan before and even visited him. I’ve also met Shah Rukh Khan. I enjoyed working with the talented cast of *Junglee*. Collaborating with Indian actors and exploring new cultures excites me,” Russell shared.
When asked about recent Indian films he enjoyed, the 66-year-old director praised *RRR*, calling it “really cool.”

Reflecting on his career, Russell revisited fond memories from the making of *The Mask*, which marked its 30th anniversary this year. He shared an anecdote about filming the iconic “Cuban Pete” dance sequence, recalling how Jim Carrey, despite being sick with the flu, insisted on completing the scene, embodying the spirit of “the show must go on.” Cameron Diaz, who was making her debut, supported Carrey throughout the challenging shoot.
Career in Horror and Comedy
Having made his directorial debut with the cult horror film *A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors*, Russell emphasized the parallels between horror and comedy in storytelling. His recent film, *Witchboard*, marks a return to horror and includes elements he hadn’t explored in his earlier works.
“Horror is popular now because the world is facing troubled times,” Russell remarked, adding that *Witchboard* might be his last venture in the genre.
Known for blending action, horror, and comedy, Russell’s illustrious career also includes action hits like *Eraser* with Arnold Schwarzenegger and *Paradise City* starring Bruce Willis and John Travolta.
