Russia Joins Growing Support for India’s UNSC Bid Following UK, US, and France Endorsements

Russia has backed India’s long-standing bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), joining support from nations like the UK, US, and France. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized the need for greater representation for the Global South at the UN General Assembly. While this endorsement strengthens India’s position, reforming the UNSC remains challenging due to the need for consensus among all member states.

In a notable diplomatic advancement, Russia has expressed its support for India’s long-standing pursuit of a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This announcement follows similar endorsements from several nations, including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Bhutan, Portugal, and Chile.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov remarked, “The ongoing discussions within the UN and other platforms for establishing a fairer world order undoubtedly necessitate an expansion of representation for the Global South. We endorse the candidacies of Brazil and India while promoting positive outcomes for the African Union’s well-known initiatives.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer previously voiced a similar sentiment, advocating for UNSC reform to transform it into a “more representative body.” He called for permanent representation for African nations, alongside Brazil, India, Japan, and Germany.

India has been a strong proponent of UNSC reform, asserting that its absence from the Council’s permanent membership fails to reflect current geopolitical dynamics. The country’s Permanent Representative at the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, has consistently challenged the ongoing dominance of the five permanent members, highlighting the urgent need for a more inclusive and equitable global governance framework.

With Russia’s recent endorsement, India’s chances of securing a permanent seat on the UNSC have significantly improved. Nevertheless, achieving reform will be challenging, as it requires consensus among all UN member states. As the international community confronts pressing global challenges, the momentum for a more representative UNSC is likely to intensify.
