Vicky Kaushal’s Intense Transformation for ‘Chhaava’: Director’s Dedication to Authenticity

Vicky Kaushal’s Warrior Transformation: A Testament to Grit and Authenticity

Vicky Kaushal is gearing up for the release of his much-anticipated historical drama Chhaava, in which he embodies the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. As the film inches closer to its release, Kaushal has been sharing intriguing insights into the rigorous preparation required for the role. Recently, he revealed how director Laxman Utekar insisted on complete authenticity in his portrayal, refusing to begin shooting until Kaushal achieved the physicality and skills befitting a true Maratha warrior.

The Grueling Physical Transformation

During a conversation on Radio Nasha, Kaushal disclosed that Chhaava posed the most challenging physical transformation of his career. The actor had to undergo an intense fitness regime, gaining a staggering 25 kilograms of muscle to embody the fearless warrior. Achieving this feat took him seven months of relentless dedication, but it was a non-negotiable aspect of his preparation, as per Utekar’s vision.
“This has been the toughest role of my life physically. Gaining 25 kg of muscle was extremely challenging, and it took me months of rigorous training. But Laxman sir was adamant that we wouldn’t start shooting until I had mastered the look and skills. He told me, ‘I refuse to cheat. I won’t use VFX.’ That meant I had to fully commit to the transformation,” Kaushal shared.

Mastering the Art of War: Training Beyond the Gym

Beyond building a warrior’s physique, Kaushal had to acquire the essential skills of a historical combatant. His training extended to horseback riding, sword fighting, and hand-to-hand combat. This commitment to realism meant that every battle sequence would be executed with raw intensity, avoiding reliance on CGI or exaggerated stunt choreography.
“I had to grow my hair, beard, and build a body that looked like that of a warrior who had fought battles all his life. It took time before we even began filming. On set, if there were 2,000 people in a battle scene, they were all real—there were no shortcuts,” Kaushal emphasized.
The film boasts an ensemble cast of 2,000 junior artists and 500 of India’s best stunt professionals, ensuring the battle sequences remain as immersive and authentic as possible.

Akshaye Khanna’s Chilling Transformation as Aurangzeb

Adding to the anticipation, Chhaava features Akshaye Khanna in the role of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Kaushal shared his astonishment at Khanna’s transformation, stating that he was left in awe upon seeing him in character.
“I was shown photos of his look, and I was completely stunned. But when I saw him on set, with his demeanor, his expressions—it was something else. He has made the character come alive, and his portrayal of Aurangzeb’s menace is going to surprise the audience,” Kaushal revealed.

A Cinematic Experience Rooted in Historical Authenticity

With Chhaava, Laxman Utekar appears to be crafting a period film that values historical accuracy and realism over digital enhancements. The film’s production design, action sequences, and performances are all rooted in authenticity, making it a highly anticipated spectacle for cinema lovers.
By investing months in physical training, mastering combat skills, and ensuring historical accuracy on set, Vicky Kaushal has proven his dedication to his craft. His portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj, combined with Akshaye Khanna’s formidable presence as Aurangzeb, sets the stage for an epic cinematic experience that will leave audiences captivated.
