The re-release of Real Star Upendra’s debut film as a hero, “A,” on May 17, 2024

Real Star Upendra’s debut film as a hero, “A,” is set to re-release on May 17. This 1998 superhit Kannada film marked Upendra’s entry as a leading actor. The decision to re-release comes amidst a lack of major releases due to the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections and the latest IPL season. This trend of re-releasing blockbuster movies from the past seems to have gained momentum in South India.
The success of re-releasing Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar’s films on his birth anniversary has contributed to this trend in Kannada cinema. Films like “Jackie,” “Anjani Putra,” and “Power Star” were re-released, with “Jackie” receiving a particularly warm reception from fans. However, the re-releases on May 10 didn’t perform as well as “Jackie.”
Now, after 26 years, the makers of Upendra’s “A” have decided to re-release the film on May 17. Fans of Upendra, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see their favorite actor and director in his iconic role once again, are excited about this news. “A” had a remarkable run when it was first released, selling over 15 lakhs audio cassettes, setting a record in 1998.
Directed by Upendra himself, “A” also served as a platform to introduce talents like actress Chandini, music director Guru Kiran, and cinematographer H C Venugopal. The film’s success extended beyond Karnataka as it was later dubbed in Telugu, where it enjoyed a successful 100-day run.
