Rajinikanth and Amitabh’s Film *Vettaiyan* Falls Short at the Box Office

Vettaiyan, the long-awaited Tamil action film starring Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan, has underperformed at the box office, earning a total of Rs 230 crore globally after a promising start with Rs 183 crore in its opening weekend. Despite becoming Tamil Nadu’s second-highest grosser of the year with Rs 95 crore, it failed to meet expectations and is considered a below-average performer due to its Rs 160 crore budget. This marks the first time a collaboration between the two legends has not resulted in a blockbuster, breaking a trend established by their previous hits. Vettaiyan currently ranks seventh for the year but is expected to fall out of the top 10 as more films are released.

*Vettaiyan*, the Tamil action film reuniting Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan after 33 years, opened to a mixed response, earning an impressive Rs 183 crore over its extended 4-day weekend globally. However, lukewarm reviews led to a limited total earnings of Rs 230 crore in its lifetime run. In Tamil Nadu, the film grossed Rs 95 crore, becoming the state’s second-highest grosser after Vijay’s *The Greatest of All Time*. Across India, it earned Rs 151.5 crore, with an additional Rs 78.5 crore from overseas markets.

Despite its worldwide earnings, *Vettaiyan*, with a budget of Rs 160 crore, is regarded as a below-average performer, marking the first time a Rajinikanth-Amitabh film has not become a blockbuster. Their previous collaborations—*Andhaa Kaanoon* (1983), *Geraftaar* (1985), and *Hum* (1991)—were major hits. *Vettaiyan* is currently the seventh-highest grosser of the year but may drop out of the top 10 as upcoming releases hit theaters.
